Teaching Your Son

Recently I discovered a girl I dated in my youth had gone on to be with the Lord. While many others I’ve cared for also have, it brought back deep feelings and a sadness I couldn’t understand, and if I’m honest (I always strive to be), I’ve struggled mightily with those emotions.

Somehow two to three months earlier, before finding out she had passed, memories of my early years kept coming popping up, as if something was pushing me. I know, now, it’s all a part of God’s hand on my life, at first it wasn’t so obvious. He was working to accomplish something in me and through me. Teaching Your Son is something God desires we all do, to the best of our ability.

Proverbs 22:6 — Raise up your child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

I began having these thoughts, I now realize, when I first started writing my new novel series, THE MARKS BOY’S ROCK, a series I had no idea would unfold the way God has moved on my spirit, it’s wrapped in so many real life events, situations and needs. I’d been working on the first book in the series for two months, when the thoughts first came, it’ll take another seven or eight before I start seeking representation. Tentatively, I’ve named it Homecoming Dance.

The novels and short stories I write aren’t just fuzzy feel good stories most might associate with Christian fiction. They deal with hard things in life, from a real life perspective. Some are about places faith (more accurately those in it) has let down the very people they were supposed to love and support. But as a follower, because He did it for me, my novels do have happy endings, sometimes heroic happy endings.

Getting it right!

Homecoming Dance doesn’t point fingers, it doesn’t look for vindication, it empowers you in your faith, and shares the importance of knowing your son. Developing a trust and a relationship that allows you to talk about anything, which means ANYTHING. Did I say you’ll also enjoy the story, and how God works in their midst? You will.

Sometimes life is harder than it has to be. Coming to grips with what is important in your home is the most difficult decisions you can make. As a follower, not just a believer, I have come to know that God must be first, my wife second and my family third, all decisions must be made off of this order of importance. Unfortunately most decisions nowadays revolve around getting children involved in everything, with little time to actually know them, their heart or their intimate thoughts and desires.
